Assistant Program Coordinator

I am a graduate of Jane Adams High School and attended Monterrey Peninsula College I have seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. I have lived in the Union Miles area over thirty six years. I also raised a foster son. I was a chaperon for the Upward Bound Program of Baldwin Wallace College when my boys were in the program in the late 1980s and 1990s.

I have been street club president and served on the board of directors of the Mount Pleasant community council. I worked as a case manager for the department of human services in the Cleveland, Ohio, Hollister, California, and Indianapolis, Indiana. I also worked for the Mary O Butcher program Young Family Services dealing with pregnant teenagers in the 1960s.

I have had recognition from the Ohio House of Representatives District 12, and the Representative of the 123rd General Assembly for my community involvement and helped to guarantee a high level of success for all projects I have been associated with. I am also a member of Ward 2 Democratic Club. During the late 70s and early 80s, I was a member of the search team for the murder and missing children of Atlanta, Georgia. I have been placed in the Mt. Pleasant Community Council Historical Project an Oral Perspective.

I started with Joyce Hood and the K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. Youth Organization after Shakira Johnson body was found murdered in 2004. It has been a learning experience for me, and very rewarding. These past years I have traveled with the youth to Washington D.C. and Columbus, Ohio.

We have attended youth summits, city council meetings, parades, candlelight vigils, festivals, and ribbon cutting ceremonies. As recently as June 19th, 2007 K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. attended the unveiling of the African-American Cultural Gardens. We have collaborated with many community leaders including the Cleveland police commander of the fourth district, the City of Cleveland health inspector, the housing inspector, and the head of the drug enforcement task force. I have had the pleasure of meeting the Mayor of Cleveland, and the Governor of Ohio, as well as the local councilman Robert J. White III. He even nicknamed me the Professor. It has been a true pleasure to become the Assistant Program Coordinator of the K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. Youth Organization.

Being at East Technical High school has given me the skill and motivation to achieve and excel in life as well as academics. Dedication plays a big part in my achievements, as well as, responsibility. Attending school, being on time, and studying to get good grades has made me dedicated and responsible. My personality is a fun, outgoing, intelligent person who loves detail.

As a captain for the East Technical High school swim team, I have learned to be a leader. While swimming I kept a G.P.A of over 3.5 and was the recipient of the John A. Bergfeld M.D. award for top student athlete of 2008-2009. My swimming skills had leaded me to become a lifeguard. Being a lifeguard showed me how to take on leadership roles and gave me certification as to how to save lives and act in an emergency. I would have to say that was the biggest risk I have ever taken in life. The high responsibility over someone’s life was overwhelming. Just knowing its all in my hands on rather someone lives or dies. If I were not to do my job, all the legal terms and actions that could be held against me, but I took the responsibility.

I am involved in my community by being apart of the K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. Youth Organization. In this program, we help feed the homeless, tutor elementary to high school students and support our neighborhood and other like programs by attending fundraisers and parades. At East Tech, I am the class Secretary and rank 8th in my class hoping that by the end of the year I will rank number 1. The colleges I plan on going to is Florida AMU, Morehouse, or Bowling Green. Graduating from a college or university with my bachelor’s degree will be a great accomplishment in my life. I will be a second lieutenant in the Air force, knowing Japanese, having a degree in engineering and becoming a firefighter. Being a firefighter in the Air Force will help my society because I will be helping people who are in danger, while at the same time helping my country. Trying to achieve these goals will be hard, but with as much support from people like K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E., you and many others I can achieve my goals.

THANK YOU

ARIEL  MARBURY

My name is Ariel Marbury; I am 17 years old and currently a junior at Maple Heights High School.  I am ranked 6th in my graduating class.  I enjoy many things which include learning new things, reading, acting, modeling and sports.  I run track and cross country at my high school.  My favorite sport is track, running the mile and two mile.  Drawing is my own personal way to express myself and to relieve any stress I may have.  I can draw anything; cartoons, scenic views or a person’s face.  Hanging out with friends is always a personal favorite because the people that I surround myself with are encouraging, lively and most of all have goals and are working toward them.  I don’t watch much television, but when I do my top favorites are Girlfriends, Law and Order, Monk and Psych.

I have many goals that I set for myself, some short term and some long term.  I would like to graduate high school in the top 5 of my class with a full scholarship to the college of my choice.  I want to graduate college with a degree in mechanical engineering and eventually get my Doctorate.  I want to learn the Chinese culture and language.  I am absolutely in love with acting and modeling.  Becoming successful in these fields has always been a dream of mine.  I have performed in school and community plays, as well as, modeling for a local retailer.  In the October, 2007 issue of Cleveland Magazine, my picture is featured (full page) as the Cayenne Model for Neo Xplosion.

As far as motivation, I have always been a self motivated and independent person.  I have been working every weekend starting at 6am since I was 15 years old.  I don’t really like for things to be handed to me.  I like to work for them on my own,   which allows me appreciate and enjoy it more.   It bothers me when I see people who have had everything handed to them all their lives and just waste it away with no appreciation.  I never want to be like that.  I understand that sometimes you may need help, but I don’t want to become dependant or always waiting for someone to constantly give me something.  I want to earn it.

I am a Marbury, and my family legacy is one of many firsts.  My family was the first black settlers in Leeds, Alabama.  There is a street in Leeds named after my family, “Marbury Lane.”  The Marbury family tree starts with Cisero Davis and Melissa Hood in the 1800’s.  My great uncle Leonard Marbury is the 1st black sate trooper in Leeds, great uncle Raymond received and award for “Outstanding Young Men of America,” great uncle Carl was the Director of Education and Research Center; He was also the Dean at A&M College and is currently a professor at Spellman College, great aunt Augusta was the 1st black female at the Ford plant and of course there is Stephon Marbury, who plays basketball for New York.  These are just a few accomplishments of the Marbury family.  These facts are written in a book title “Leeds Her Story” published by the History Committee, Leeds Bicentennial Commission, Leeds Alabama, copyright 1979.

I met Joyce Hood in the summer of 2002, her niece, Vivian Woody, invited my mom to a gathering she had in her back yard.  My mother took my sister, one of my good friends and myself.  It was such a fun event.  All the kids were singing, dancing and having a good time.  We had not been in touch with Joyce after that until recently.  It is amazing now to see what those parties in the back yard of her house has turned in to and I am glad to be a part of it.

                                                                                          Rhemi Walton,

Hi, I attend John Adams High School I have been in a program called K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. since I was age five. K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. has taught me how to value education and control my anger. I became a K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. mentor at age 14 for a young man named Ronald Whittaker and he has shown much improvement over the years.  Because of K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. YOUTH ORGANIZATION I am a better person.

 Dayna Lawrence

Dayna Lawrence is a 16 year old scholar currently attending Maple Heights High School as a senior. She ranks second in her class and has been selected to lead as president of her school’s National Honors Society. Throughout her academic career, Dayna has received many awards for the acknowledgements of her many achievements. She ha maintained a 4.0 or higher GPA thus far, and she plans to continue on that path that she has started.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Dayna has also participated in extra curricular activities. At her school, she enjoyed being a part of the drill team. When she wasn’t practicing with the drill team, she participated in the writing club, gospel choir, debate club, and an association known as the Family, Career, and Consumer Leaders of America (FCCLA). Outside of school, she enjoyed attending the Karamu House. Dancing, modeling, and acting have always been a few of Dayna’s passions. Another passion would be helping those who can’t always help themselves, whether that means giving advice or donating clothes. Dayna enjoys giving back to her community because she feels that she has been blessed with so much.

When Dayna is not working on academics or activities geared towards her future, she enjoys spending time with her family. The youth in her family adore her and her company. They love to play ‘tag’ with her because she is always positive, fun, and full of energy. Dayna is a big fan of dancing! She especially loves learning dances such as the salsa and the meringue because they remind her of the dancing done in her birth place, the Dominican Republic. Music is also a big part of her life. Sometimes she listens to music when she needs help getting through her day. On television, she loves to watch Law and Order: SVU, Without a Trace, and other shows on law enforcement because she wishes o become a great lawyer someday in addition to owning her own business. If she’s not watching a law program, then you can probably find her watching cartoons.

Overall, Dayna is an extremely well rounded person young adult who prides herself in striving for the best and refusing to settle for the average. She is a young lady with goals who works hard to achieve them, but knows how and when to relax and have fun. Now, Dayna is a part of K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. Youth Organization, and she is proud that she has the opportunity to contribute to the program’s known success.

Brittany Blanks (BEFORE)

I joined Knowledge in April, 2007 and am very pleased that I did.  I have had a lot of good feedback and enjoy the activities.  The activities that I enjoyed the most were the Mother's Day event and the New Day in Hough where we won seven trophies. Mrs. Hood placed me in a program call Rosie's Girls for the summer it was exciting. She has set the standard for each one of us. This year my GPA requirement is 3.25. Last time it was 3.0 and I did it. She said that she will raise the bar each time to keep us focused. Thanks Mrs. Hood

Brittany Blanks (NOW)

Hello my name is Brittany blanks and I am apart of K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E Youth Organization. I have been in this organization for almost two years now. The things I have learned in K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E is proper etiquette, I met most of our councilmen and even remember names. I learned that violence is not the answer to everyone problem. Also being in K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E opened a lot of doors for me. We just came back from Washington D.C. for the 4-H Club. I learned so much about our culture and not only mine but the Jewish culture too.

I attend south high school and I am in the 9th grade. My goals for the future are to go to the National Guard and attend college. When I attend college I want to be a forensic scientist. I like the shows CSI and Law & Order. They make those jobs look so interesting.

My priorities are set. Even though I had a rough year in school last year this year I am focused on the prize. That is passing the OGT and graduating. People could try and bring me down but in all actuality they are making me stronger toward myself and other people.

De'Juan Rutledge is my name. I am 15 years old. I attend John Adams High School where I am in the tenth grade with a GPA of 3.71. I play football for the John Adams Rebels in Cleveland, Ohio of which  I am the quaterback. I am also on the wrestling team, my weight class is 215 and I play baseball (left field), all at John Adams as well. I sing in the choir at Morelight Missionary Baptist Church and I enjoy the time I spend with my family. I have been a member of KNOWLEDGE for over four years. I have six other family members who are members of KNOWLEDGE as well.  My entire family has been given the opportunity to get to know Joyce Hood and her family. She has always encouraged us to continue to do good in school. My family is my backbone and my grandmother has shown us true love. That is what KNOWLEDGE is all about family.

Youth President

Ms. Tameka Archie, I'm 18 years old, and I recently graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. In the fall, I will be attending The University of Akron. I plan to major in Education. I love teaching and mentoring the youth. KNOWLEDGE has given me a chance to meet many different children of all ages and help them in several different aspects of their everyday lives. The organization has also helped me grow as a young woman because I have young ladies looking up to me now. I thank my mentor Andrea Balser, because she has always tried her best to instill in me the importance of becoming a successful Black woman. She has paved the way for me to follow in her footsteps, and I plan to be an inspiration to many of my peers!

Mynisianion Michael Bryson   Jr.

I am 15 years old. I have been with Joyce Hood for five years. I was ten years old when I met Joyce, and Daryl Hood and got involved with K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. At first we were playing kick ball .Then we started to meet new people and different programs and youths. I learned more about CLEVELAND, OHIO and the people that’s in it. I meet over 100 or more kids and I have met a lot of important people that can help me in life. She helps me pick my goals into becoming a lawyer and going to one of the black colleges of my choice.  I am still thinking as to which one. In 2005 I meet a lot of kids and Joyce family such as Nathaniel, James, Sierra, Rhemi, and Shanika and more. I meet different area Mayors and lot of different people that work with the Mayor. Then in 2006 we got to doing a lot more things and helping a lot of people. Then in 2007 I made it to the 9th grade and when I was in the 8th my GPA was 2.85, now it is 2.54 I can do better. I go to John Adam High School. I am doing well thank to Joyce Hood help. I love to play games. I am a helpful person. I try to do well in school and I care about people a lot. I am helpful I love to play all kinds of sports. But it is time for me to get ready for the O.G.T Test and I hope I do good or better. But I have a lot to learn and Joyce Hood is getting me ready. That is all about me with Joyce and Daryl Hood in the K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E. Youth Organization.

Nathaniel Drequelle Whittsette

I have attended C.M.S.D for over 8years. I’m 14 years old. I’m standing at a 2.50 G.P.A. In 2002 a couple of my friends were telling me about a youth organization called K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E.  They were telling me stuff like it’s over 60 kids in this youth organization. So I got involved in the program. I met people that I thought I would never meet. I met people like Mayor Frank Jackson, Councilman White and many more. So I pasted it on to friends and they got involved. As of now I am standing at my fifth year in K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E.  We have done many things in the past, were hoping to do many things in the future. Joyce is a good person to me, and I am sure to many others. We play around but when it comes down to business were serious. I like when we are all together playing around. I dislike when people play to much when its time to take care of business.

I like to play football, math, traveling to significant places and funny people. Some of the things that I dislike are basketball disrespectful people and taking pictures. Hi! My name is Livunia Haney. During the time I have spent with Joyce Hood, Ms. Taylor and the other children apart of K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E Youth Organization we’ve had a lot of fun together. I really enjoyed the steps we’ve done, but what makes me happy the most is when we get to perform our steps in front of huge crowds. Also I like how we handle our business then we get rewarded for what we have accomplished. I’ve been in the K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E Youth Organization for about 2-3 years. I’m 11 years old and I’m a 6th grader at Nathan Hale Elementary School. I hope that the K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E Youth Organization continue with other children so they can have and experience a good time and good things like we do!

My name is Mariah Haney, I’m 11 years old. I’ve been apart of K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E for 3-4 years. I attend Paul Revere Elementary School. We’ve done a lot since I’ve been in this organization. We’ve done fundraisers, traveled to Washington D.C, performed at the Father Hood initiative, and different parades, we also participated in the Katrina Relief. I really enjoyed being in K.N.O.W.L.E.D.G.E Youth Organization. Joyce Hood has done a lot for the children in our organization. I want to do things she does such as: helping parents and their children, stopping the violence. I also like doing the different dance steps because that gives us a chance to shake ourselves loose.

I Passed the Ohio Graduates Test!
Hi! I’m Gennifer Stokes and I passed the OGT.

Man, that felt good to say, because at one point I didn’t think I could. When I took the test I figured “What’s the point?   I have two more years to pass it so why should
I be stressed or worried?” When I saw what the test looked like I thought to myself this looks a lot like the Proficiency test and it didn’t seem as hard as I thought it would be.   I first answer the ones I thought were easy, then I used a bit of common sense to answer the harder questions.  Some of the questions I saw before and knew the answers off the top of my head.

It seemed the week was going by too fast and before I knew it I had finished testing.  Weeks went by and I actually wanted to know if I had passed or failed.  Just when I stopped thinking about it the results were in.   My principal called me to the door like I did something wrong, I walked up to him and then he smiled and told me I passed all five parts of the Ohio Graduates Test (OGT).   At first I was relieved I wasn’t in trouble then I realized what he said.

I realized that I didn’t accomplish this on my own I’d like thank all the adults and influences in my life, like my dad, my teachers, Mr. Eubanks, Mr. Boyd, and most of all Ms. Joyce. of Knowledge Youth.

Chavez Bell, good looking 15 year old young man. I will be going in the the 9th grade this year. High school here I come.  I have a grade point average of 2.86 that is not so good this year. Mrs. Joyce wanted us to try for a 3.0 this year. I have known Mrs. Joyce for over five years. She will always say I will get it next time. Every year she "raise the bar for us on our individual needs" of course she say this to us every time. You have a 2.0 next time I want a 2.25 next time 2.50 and so on and so. She will always support us. One thing I know that I am good at without a doubt is cooking, and face painting. I do it for the group at our community connections block party. We have so much fun. I enjoy being apart of somthing that is real because I am real.

Take care!!!
